Does Homeschooling Fit You By Mary Joyce, Sat Dec 10th
The reasons for a family to homeschool are as varied as thereare families who do homeschool. Why are you consideringhomeschooling? Educational concerns with the current school system? Social or religious reasons? Take a step back from the aforementioned. The real reason you would even consider when itcomes to homeschooling your child should be the wonderment and satisfaction you receive out of teaching and spending your days with your child. The opportunity to learn with your child and experience the pleasure of mastering each of your homeschool unit studies with your child should be your reason to homeschool. Each day learning more and more about your childshould be your reason to homeschool. If this is not the motivational foundation from which
you homeschool, then all other reasons probably won’t carry you the distance. Here as some other very important topics to give seriousconsideration to: What is your level of patience? As you already know, just theeveryday activities of parenting can sometime test one’spatience. Add to that the struggles of learning unit studies andyour level of patience will be taken to a new level.
Are you good at multitasking and scheduling on the fly? With allthe demands on your time that homeschooling brings, remember that the everyday tasks and chores around the house will still remain. Many times you’ll have to combine an everyday householdtask or trip with a homeschool lesson. Are you organized? Although many homeschool lessons and unitstudies may appear to be impromptu and random, they are not.Your homeschool lesson plans and daily schedule should be wellthought out. And you should know how much documentation andrecord keeping is required by your state. Are you creative? Making an excellent educational experience without busting the budget is a must. There are many inexpensiveand free resources available. How comfortable are you with correcting your child? Howcomfortable is your child with you correcting them? Do you feelyour child is comfortable telling you that they ‘just don’t getit’? As anyone learns something new correction and feedback isconstant not just the occasional correcting through the courseof the day. Finally, how does your child feel about homeschooling? Remember, this is about them and their education. If they aren’t excitedabout the opportunity, then homeschooling the family may not beright at this time. With patience, creativity, and a good sense of humor, you willbe on your way to a very rewarding experience.
